How a cribbage board is laid out
A game is 121 points. Each player pegs along a track of holes in groups of five and wins on the game hole, hole 121 (American Cribbage Congress tournament rules). Each run of 30 holes is a street. The template adds 2 start holes per player at the start end to park the pegs; set 0 to 3 under More options.
Three layouts
The classic board, and the starting layout here, has 60 holes per player: 30 out and 30 back, pegged twice around to reach 121 (Wikipedia, pagat.com). With the starting sizes a 2 player classic board is 10 in × 2 1/2 in, 126 holes, and prints on one Letter sheet plus the check sheet.
A long board gives each player all 120 holes, up the outside row and back on the inside. The ACC plays tournaments on long boards: 60 holes up and 60 down. The 2 player version is 18 1/4 in × 2 1/2 in with 246 holes. Four rows of 30 puts one street in each row and snakes back and forth, for a shorter, wider 9 5/8 in × 4 1/2 in board.
On 120-hole boards the skunk line goes between holes 90 and 91, because a skunk is a win by 31 or more and hole 90 is the stink hole. pagat.com counts a loser on 60 or fewer as lurched, so some boards add a double skunk line between 60 and 61. A classic board passes hole 90 on its second lap, at the same spot as hole 30, so the template draws no skunk lines on it.
Questions
How many holes are on a cribbage board?
A classic board has 60 holes per player, pegged twice around, plus a game hole: 122 for 2 players. A long or four-row board has 120 per player plus the game hole: 242 for 2 players and 363 for 3. With 2 start holes each, this template draws 126 (classic) or 246 (long) for 2 players.
Where does the skunk line go on a cribbage board?
On a 120-hole board, between holes 90 and 91 on every track. The American Cribbage Congress defines a skunk as winning by 31 or more points, so a loser still on 90 or below is skunked. A double skunk line, if you want one, goes between 60 and 61.
What size drill bit do cribbage pegs need?
Measure your pegs. Rockler’s standard cribbage templates are made for 1/8 in pegs and its XL ones for 1/4 in pegs (Woodworker’s Journal). Drill a test hole in scrap and check the fit before you drill the board.
How far apart should cribbage holes be?
There’s no official size. This tool starts with holes 1/4 in apart and groups of five 3/8 in apart, which suits 1/8 in pegs. Change both to suit your pegs, and keep at least about 1/16 in (1.5 mm) of wood between holes so the grain doesn’t split.
Can I make a 3 or 4 player cribbage board?
Yes. Pick 3 or 4 players. Classic and long boards get two rows per player; four rows of 30 gets one lane per player in each row. The board grows wider, and each player adds a track, a game hole and start holes: a 3 player classic board has 189 holes.
How do I print the template at actual size?
In the print dialog choose 100% or Actual size, and turn off Fit to page or Shrink to fit. Then measure the square on the first sheet. If it isn’t exactly 4 in (or 100 mm in metric) on each side, the page was scaled, so print again.
