The three boards

The English board is a cross of 33 holes on a 7 by 7 grid. The European (French) board has 37, adding one hole inside each corner of the cross. Both start full with the centre hole empty (Wikipedia). The triangle has 15 holes in five rows; the template marks its top hole as the one to leave empty, though any one will do.

Example: the English board with 5/8 in holes 1 in apart fits on an 8 1/2 in round board and prints on 2 Letter sheets plus the check sheet.

Questions

How many holes are on a peg solitaire board?

The English board has 33 holes and 32 pegs. The European board has 37 holes and 36 pegs. The triangle peg game has 15 holes and 14 pegs.

Which hole starts empty?

On the English and European boards, the centre hole. On the triangle any one hole can start empty. The template rings the top corner hole; Wikipedia notes an empty corner can be solved in ten moves.

How far apart should the holes be?

Far enough that pegs or marbles don’t touch. This tool starts at 5/8 in holes 1 in apart for marbles. For golf tees or small pegs, 1/4 in holes 3/4 in apart makes a compact board.

Can I make a marble solitaire board?

Yes. Use the same layout and set the hole size a little under your marble size, then drill shallow wells with a Forstner bit. Test the depth in scrap so the marbles sit without rolling.

How do I print the template at actual size?

In the print dialog choose 100% or Actual size, and turn off Fit to page or Shrink to fit. Then measure the square on the first sheet. If it isn’t exactly 4 in (or 100 mm in metric) on each side, the page was scaled, so print again.

How do I put the pages together?

Trim each sheet along the dashed lines on its left and top edges. Lay it over the sheet before so the cut edge sits on the solid line and the short ticks join up, then tape it. Holes near a join print on both sheets, so they should land on top of each other too.
