How the board is laid out
Following the Pegs and Jokers rules on pagat.com, the board has one side per player. Each side is 18 holes long, with a corner hole shared with the next side. The castle, 5 holes, branches off the 3rd hole after the corner, and the 5-hole start area sits next to the 8th hole, the come-out spot. Here both point in toward the middle of the board.
Tock, as played in Quebec, uses 4 marbles each on 18 track holes per player. Following the FADOQ Tock rules and Jeux Faugère, the 4-hole home leaves from the middle hole of each side, a marble comes out 2 holes further on, and the corner is the 7th hole after that. Vermont TUK (or TUC) boards are bigger: 20 holes a side, 80 around the edge, plus 4 home holes per player (Wikipedia). Family boards vary, so holes per side, castle and start sizes are all under More options.
Example: a 4 player Pegs and Jokers board with 1/4 in holes 3/4 in apart has 112 holes (72 track, 20 castle, 20 start) on a 15 1/4 in square. Six players need a hexagon 29 1/16 in across.
Questions
How many holes are on a Pegs and Jokers board?
18 track holes per side, so 72 for 4 players, 108 for 6 and 144 for 8, plus 5 castle and 5 start holes per player. A 4 player board has 112 holes in all.
Where do the castle and start holes go?
The castle branches off the 3rd hole after each corner and the start area sits beside the 8th hole, the come-out spot, per the rules on pagat.com. This template runs both in toward the centre of the board.
What is the difference between Tock and Pegs and Jokers?
Both are card-driven race games around a track. The Tock rules above use 4 marbles each; Pegs and Jokers uses 5 pegs each and jokers in the deck. Tock here has 18 holes a side with home in the middle. For a 20-a-side board like Vermont TUK (80 holes around the edge), set Holes per side, counting one corner, to 20 under More options, and check where your rules put home and start.
What size pegs or holes should I use?
Boards are made for golf tees, cribbage pegs or marbles, so measure what you have and test in scrap. The starting size is 1/4 in holes 3/4 in apart for pegs; Tock switches to 5/8 in holes 1 in apart for marbles.
How do I print the template at actual size?
In the print dialog choose 100% or Actual size, and turn off Fit to page or Shrink to fit. Then measure the square on the first sheet. If it isn’t exactly 4 in (or 100 mm in metric) on each side, the page was scaled, so print again.
How do I put the pages together?
Trim each sheet along the dashed lines on its left and top edges. Lay it over the sheet before so the cut edge sits on the solid line and the short ticks join up, then tape it. Holes near a join print on both sheets, so they should land on top of each other too.
